half way between Bangor and the Canadian border is a rare old cable bridge that was built around 1860

This unique bridge traverses the Carrabassett River, and over over 150 years it's been getting horses, carriages, carts and cars into the West Village of New Portland.

Known as the Wire Bridge, it is the only one of its kind left in Maine

Its span is 190 feet but only one lane wide.
