My uncle use to pull us with his car on an upside down car hood. Of course this was in the 40s and 50s when old hoods were like boats.
A hood has 3 very good uses, between the fenders as intended, and as a sled, and as a sunvisor on 1930s cars.
one more, a hood makes a really good trunk lid or rear body carapace. Damn..., that's probably the 1st time in my life that I've ever used the word carapace
